Meet Amanda Mahony, the woman that balances it all with a huge smile and amazing attitude – literally. When Amanda let us into her beautiful riverside home she was balancing one small child on her hip and preparing food for another all while telling us about her newly formed online business, Little Wing, which was the brain child of her sister-in-law Tara.
“Tara was showing me her ideas for some cuffs and I loved them and said I’d be her first customer!,” Amanda explains, “Instead we ended up putting our heads together, combining our skills and turning an idea into a business,” she explained.
We asked Amanda a few questions about Little Wing, her personal style and everything in between.
How do you usually like to style the bracelets? The Little Wing woman is confident and fun. She wants an edge to her wardrobe, stand-out statement pieces, but also appreciates luxuries! All our pieces are handcrafted. We pride ourselves on our authenticity & pay so much attention to detail – the best materials, customised buttons, beautiful packaging. We want the Little Wing woman to feel spoilt when she receives a delivery from us.
We wear our products all the time!! They are very versatile – earthy & boho with floaty dresses, or edgy and urban when worn with jeans, heels and a simple singlet (my personal style favourite!). We’ve added some metallic leathers into our range which are great with your favourite little black dress.
We know that you are in business with your sister-in-law, tell us a little about how that came about?
Tara is extremely creative and dreamt the concept up when she was on the lookout for some feathery accessories – but couldn’t find anything that wasn’t tacky! It is fantastic working with her, she’s really fun to be with, very calm and an amazing problem solver. I’m much more reactive!! We seem to balance each other out well.
How would you describe your personal style?
Simple and fresh. My go to outfit (when I’m not running after my toddler or burping my baby!) is a white singlet and jeans. Dressed up with heels and accessories, or down with sneakers.
What is it like being a full-time mum and running a business? How do you balance it out?
I feel extremely fortunate to be doing something I love and that can be juggled or balanced with being a mum. Tara has three girls, and I have Poppy & Max…family always comes first but we both work really hard on all aspects of Little Wing – it’s a small business (just the two of us), so we design, create, market, package, arrange deliveries, manage the website…every step from start to finish. It can be hectic – sometimes I have those “if only they could see me now” giggles to myself as I’m emailing a super cool fashion influencer, one hand on the keyboard, the other getting Play Doh out of my hair, or rocking a baby to sleep. (In fact I may just be having one of those moments right now!!)
We know that you’re a Brisbane girl, where are your favourite places to go on a date with your husband?
We love New Farm & stay local! Absolute favourites are:
- Beccofino for Italian that never fails (best pizza bases in the world!!!!) & always a fun atmosphere.
- Longtime for Asian flavour kapow & great music. If it’s just the 2 of you try to get two seats at the chef bar & watch the deliciousness unfold! Cocktails are amazing too.
- Gerard’s Bistro. Watch the passing parade from a window seat & pop over to the bar for a cleanser later
- Vine. Fantastic family business with delicious food. We love sitting outside, New Farm alfresco is always entertaining
What is currently on rotation in your wardrobe?
My Equipment leopard print dress from Calexico, some shiny metallic Philippe Model sneakers, my favourite AG jeans legging ankle, and a full range of beautiful, handcrafted feather cuffs!
If you could buy one thing from Calexico right now, what would it be?
One thing?!!!! Noooo!!! My Wishlist includes something sparkly from Parker New York, a pair of the black Isabel Marant Bobby sneakers & her summer drop skirts, and a James Jeans denim skirt. This lust list will no doubt keep expanding!!!
What’s next for Little Wing Designs?
It looks like we have an exciting opportunity to retail in the US next year which we are so thrilled about. We also have plenty of great ideas for new products but we just really want to make sure we have everything well set for our first line – our cuffs. It’s one, exciting step at a time. To quote Jimi Hendrix’s words: “Fly on Little Wing”.
