Denim is the heart and soul of the Calexico uniform, and no one knows that better than Calexico Founder and Director, Nicky Charman.
A denim fan girl from way back — Calexico has over 10 denim labels in store at any one time, including Citizens of Humanity, Ba&sh, AG Jeans, and — she knows her stuff when it comes to designer denim.
But when choosing the pair she turns to daily, she’s not afraid of picking favourites. We got the goss’ on the cut Nicky lives in: the ultra flattering Isabelle by AG Jeans.
What makes this cut so wearable?
Nicky Charman: “We find these jeans are universally flattering — they look good on any age or size.
The high waist adds length to the legs while the crop ankle has a dressier feel than a full length pair. A high waist also holds you in in all the right places! The raw hem finish adds a modern touch, and this crop looks as good with flats as it does with heels. We find this style looks particularly good on someone with shorter legs and a longer torso.”
Which is your favourite wash?
“I live in the clean blue distressed wash (20 Years). The light distressing gives them a bit of personality, which I love. I also love the light grey Interstellar wash, and black. I want a pair in every colour!
Calexico stocks the Interstellar (a light grey wash), 8 years (faded indigo with slight distressing), 9 years (dark indigo wash), and 20 Years (light blue wash) washes.”
What would you say to someone who is hesitant to try straight leg denim for the first time?
“I’ve seen the same transition with the straight leg that we saw 10 years ago when we went from wearing a boot cut to skinny jeans.
10 years ago skinny jeans were risqué, now they’re the norm. Straight leg denim is having a similar moment in time. Straight leg jeans are more forgiving and more flattering — they suit a wide range of ages and body types. I think a straight leg jean is more polished than a spray-on pair of skinnies. Straight is the new silhouette and it’s not going anywhere. Once you get into the straight leg groove there’s really no turning back.”
Any tips for styling the Isabelle?
“I call the Isabelle the sexy mum jean because the cut accentuates the leg while the high waist gives you that feeling of security. I love to pair back the Isabelle with a tee and a feature belt or elevate the look with a tucked silk blouse and a pair of heels. I can wear them anywhere.”
