The Dos and Don’ts Of Race Day Style

Winter is finally behind us, which means one thing: spring racing season is here! Before you throw on that dusty old fascinator, check out our handy list of spring racing dos and don’ts, to keep you well-heeled trackside, and the centre of attention for all the right reasons.

Do, know your race day dress codes.

Oaks Day is ladies day, and your chance to go girly in florals, prints, and bright colours. Derby Day is strictly black and white, while Melbourne Cup is the day to go large in classic silhouettes and show stopping hats.

Don’t, be afraid of colour.

Oaks day is the traditionally feminine race day where pastels and florals rule, but Melbourne Cup is also the perfect occasion to rock a bold colour.

Do, er on the side of tradition.

Yes, rules were made to be broken, but you have to know the rules to break the rules. As a general rule, avoid anything that says ‘night time’, namely sequins, or anything midriff-cut, strapless, or backless. Super short dress are also a no no. Anything above mid-thigh is too risqué.

Do, ditch the fascinator.

This may be a controversial tip, but we’re big believers in a wide brim hat come race day. Unlike its skimpy, feathered cousin the fascinator, a hat is a timeless accessory that will see you through many a race day for years to come. Calexico favourites include Rag & Bone, HTC, and Sensi Studios.

Do, think outside the box.

You don’t have to wear a dress! A pant and blazer is a chic alternative to a dress, and a jumpsuit is a fun option to consider.

Don’t, over do it.

Keep your hair and makeup chic and minimal.

Do, make friends with sunscreen.

If you’re standing outdoors make sure your base contains a good quality SPF (especially if you’re celebrating in Queensland!)

Do, wear comfortable shoes.

Wandering home heels-in-hand is a cliche for a reason. Don’t be that girl. Choose shoes you can easily wear all day, and don’t leave your first wear until race day! Like a giddy young filly, you to must do some breaking in. Thankfully, block heels are in right now.

Don’t, hit the champs too hard.

Just saying.
