If you’ve been following the deluge of street style looks pouring out of fashion month, it’s evident that the humble sleeve has hit the big time. Yessir, the voluminous, exaggerated sleeve is back from the ‘80s and with designers such as Jacquemus, Balenciaga, Rosie Assoulin, and Calexico favourite, Caroline Constas all going large this season we have to say, we are loving the dramatic touch it adds to an outfit.
Heralded as the new off-the-shoulder, fashion girls the world over are embracing the return of the voluminous sleeve, but, unlike the off-the-shoulder craze, this trend feels much more sophisticated and wearable (goodbye, awkward bra situation) and looks as good in the office as it does out at night.
At first glance this trend might look tricky, but we assure you, styling this statement sleeve in a cinch – it’s all about balancing those proportions. The ‘70s inspired bell-sleeve is actually super flattering, while the ‘80s style puffed shoulder look paired with the cinched-in wrist can balance out the arms and make them appear slimmer. Bonus!
Our tips for styling the statement sleeve:
1. Keep your bottom half minimal and classic (and as fitted as possible). Think high-waisted blue or black denim. A white puff sleeve looks super fresh for spring paired with vintage jeans.
2. Tuck your blouse into your pants or skirt to give your waist definition. A ’70s inspired high-waisted mini is the perfect foil to all that volume.
3. Go large in the office in a classically tailored pair of black pants and a statement sleeve blouse.
