6 Sustainable Fashion Brands You Need To Know

Sustainable brands Calexico feature

Did you know…?

  • The fashion industry is one of the biggest in the world, accounting for 2% of global Gross Domestic Product. Unfortunately, it’s also now one of the biggest polluters in the world — second only to oil.
  • 85% of the human-made material found in the ocean are materials, such as nylon and acrylic, used in clothing.
  • 8 million tonnes of plastic enters the oceans every year.

We know…scary stuff!

At Calexico, we’re passionate about sustainable fashion and believe, despite these shocking stats, there is still hope!

Many brands and fashion labels are obtaining ethical certification and making a conscious effort to use sustainable practices. There are also plenty of things you can do as a consumer.

You will own plenty of clothes in your lifetime, but we only have one earth, so choose wisely, and do your research.

We’re counting down the top ethical & sustainable labels, all stocked at Calexico.

AG Jeans

Not only does AG Jeans make killer jeans, but they do some in an ethical way. AG makes all their denim in vertically integrated facilities which gives them the ability to control their impact on people and planet. AG Jeans utilises sustainable fibers and they’ve decreased their water consumption by 50% — just another reason to love them.

Ulla Johnson

Ulla Johnson bases each of her breath-taking collections on a foundation of strictly natural fibres, handcrafted processes and other responsible fashion practices.

Rag & Bone

Denim is one of the highest environmental impact products. When denim decomposes, the dye in the denim breaks down and releases toxic methane gas into the air. That’s why recycling denim is so important. Rag & Bone has recently launched a denim recycling campaign where the brand accepts any denim donation, and in exchange for donating your old denim, Rag & Bone offer a 20 percent discount on any full-price jeans.

Westward Leaning

Westward Leaning is a company that started as a socially-minded brand first and a sunglasses creator second. Best known best for their statement-making iridescent mirrored lenses, and distinct in-laid rhombus at the temple of each pair made of unique sustainable materials like ivory-alternatives, marble, and sea glass. Not only do they use recycled materials, but, Westward Leaning are a socially conscious company, donating a percentage of their proceeds to good causes.

Carner Barcelona

Contemporary European perfumery, Carner Barcelona, utilises materials from local suppliers, like their beautiful wooden stoppers from environmentally sustainable forests, as well as ethically sourcing all ingredients in the artisanal range of scents.

S’well

On average it can take 450 years for a plastic water bottle to break down (with some taking a staggering 1000 years!!). A great solution to relive this pressure on the environment is a reusable BPA-free water bottle. Any reusable water bottle is better than buying bottled water — there is no dispute on that point. But why not make it a beautiful one. Look no further than a S’well water bottle, which are as stylish as they are environmentally friendly.

Some simple things we can all do to help…

  • Recycle old clothing
  • Choose quality over quantity — avoid cheap garments made from synthetic fabrics
  • Support ECA-accredited brands
  • Participate in clothes swap events & vintage markets
